| Love of
Money, Riches, and Greed
Old
Testament
Be not thou afraid when one is
made rich, when the glory of his house is
increased; For when he dieth he shall carry
nothing away: his glory shall not descend
after him. Though while he lived he blessed
his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou
doest well to thyself. He shall go to the
generation of his fathers; they shall never
see light. Man that is in honour, and
understandeth not, is like the beasts that
perish. Psalms 49:16-20
Riches profit not in the day
of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from
death. Proverbs 11:4
He that trusteth in his riches
shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish
as a branch. Proverbs 11:28
Better is a little with
righteousness than great revenues without
right. Proverbs 16:8
How much better is it to get
wisdom than gold! and to get understanding
rather to be chosen than silver! Proverbs
16:16
Labour not to be rich: cease
from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine
eyes upon that which is not? for riches
certainly make themselves wings; they fly away
as an eagle toward heaven. Proverbs 23:4-5
Better is the poor that
walketh in his uprightness, than he that is
perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
Proverbs 28:6
He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye,
and considereth not that poverty shall come
upon him. Proverbs 28:22
He that loveth silver shall
not be satisfied with silver; nor he that
loveth abundance with increase: this is also
vanity. Ecclesiastes 5:10
Although the fig tree shall
not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the
vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and
the fields shall yield no meat; the flock
shall be cut off from the fold, and there
shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will
rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of
my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and
he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he
will make me to walk upon mine high places. To

Habakkuk 3:17-19
New
Testament
Lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves break through and
steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in
heaven. For where your treasure is, there will
your heart be also. Matthew 6:19-21
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for
your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall
drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall
put on. Is not the life more than meat, and
the body than raiment? Is not the life more
than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold
the fowls of the air: for they sow not,
neither do they reap, nor gather into barns.
Which of you by taking thought can add one
cubit unto his stature? Consider the lilies of
the field, how they grow; they toil not,
neither do they spin. Even Solomon in all his
glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Matthew 6:25-29
And Jesus looked round about,
and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall
they that have riches enter into the kingdom
of God! And the disciples were astonished at
his words. But Jesus answereth again, and
saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for
them that trust in riches to enter into the
kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle, than for a rich
man to enter into the kingdom of God. Mark
10:23-25
And he said unto them, Take
heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's
life consisteth not in the abundance of the
things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15
If any man teach otherwise,
and consent not to wholesome words, even the
words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the
doctrine which is according to godliness; He
is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about
questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh
envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,
and destitute of the truth, supposing that
gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into this world, and it
is certain we can carry nothing out. And
having food and raiment let us be therewith
content. 1st Timothy 6:3-8
For the love of money is the root of all evil:
which while some coveted after, they have
erred from the faith, and pierced themselves
through with many sorrows. 1st Timothy 6:10
My brethren, have not the
faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of
glory, with respect of persons. For if there
come unto your assembly a man with a gold
ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in
also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have
respect to him that weareth the gay clothing,
and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good
place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there,
or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not
then partial in yourselves, and are become
judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved
brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this
world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom
which he hath promised to them that love him?
But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men
oppress you, and draw you before the judgment
seats? James 2:1-6
Go to now, ye rich men, weep
and howl for your miseries that shall come
upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your
garments are moth eaten. Your gold and silver
is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a
witness against you, and shall eat your flesh
as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure
together for the last days. Behold, the hire
of the labourers who have reaped down your
fields, which is of you kept back by fraud,
crieth: and the cries of them which have
reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord
of sabaoth.Ye have lived in pleasure on the
earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your
hearts, as in a day of slaughter. James 5:1-5
